FALL PLANTING : WHAT TO PLANT AND WHEN TO DO IT
Everyone has gardened in the spring, and brought up tomatoes and peppers and the like, but not everyone has experience with a Fall garden. Fall gardening is a different animal, with different obstacles than the spring, and distinctly different crops. The key to fall gardening is planting at the correct time, so as to beat the coming frost and cold at the end of the season. To aid those of you who may be new to fall gardening, here is a fall planting chart to give you an idea of what to plant and when to do it.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR PLANTING ZONE
The USDA Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones. Understanding the zones is key to a successful planting - and knowing what plants will survive in your area. The wrong zone, may be too hot or too cold and could end up damaging your or killing your plants. Picking a plant that agrees with your zone means in all likelihood the plant will survive in the local climate. Plants should be labeled with the zone most conducive to their growth. Make sure you know your local zone, and purchase plants likely to thrive in your area. The zone for the Chattanooga area is 7A - with a low temperature hardiness of 0-5 degrees Fahrenheit. If plants cannot survive temperatures that cold, then in all likelihood they will not survive the winter.
